Florida DEP's Compliance Assistance Program is designed to improve the environmental compliance of regulated facilities. The program for compliance assistance at automotive repair shops includes a number of resources, one of which is a self-audit program. A workbook and self-audit checklist is available from DEP to help a shop manager evaluate the shop's compliance with environmental regulations.
The Compliance Assistance Self-Audit Workbook is published intended to help shop managers perform a self-audit to see if their shop complies with certain federal and state environmental regulations. Additionally, the Workbook includes suggestions to help the shop improve its environmental performance through best management practices.
By using the Self-Audit Workbook and the associated checklist as a do-it-yourself environmental inspection, a shop manager will be better prepared for a regulatory visit. By keeping the checklist and periodically re-checking processes, shops will be showing a good-faith effort in maintaining compliance. A visiting inspector can then focus on helping with things that were not understood, instead of taking enforcement because of problems that were never addressed.
